Alice Lafoks

Hi, my name is Alice Lafoks.

Yes, I live at the bottom of a shallow puddle of tenuous gas that covers a small rocky planet in a thin layer inside the heliosphere of a yellow dwarf star, in a system with just one star. This star system is located in the Orion Spiral Arm of a small galaxy, which is part of the Local Group of galaxies. The Local Group is inside the Laniakea Supercluster, which in turn is part of the observable universe.

Beyond that, my knowledge is less precise, but it seems that the observable universe is a very insignificant part of our Cosmos, which itself is just a speck among quintillions of universes in our Multiverse. The Multiverse is just one of many Multiverses in our Megaverse, which in turn is just one of many Megaverses in our Hyperverse… On top of that, all of this could very well be a digital simulation, or even a three-dimensional projection of the two-dimensional surface of a black hole in four-dimensional space.

As you might have guessed, I’m a physicist — specifically an astronomer who makes music and earns a living through programming. When I’m not making music, I love solving complex algorithmic problems; when I’m not programming, I make music.

Now, about music: I’m a co-founder of the art-rock duo Darwin’s Cat, where I play guitar and sing. My co-founder is the amazing bassist Oleh Lafoks, and we make music together. Our band is also managed by our cat Loki Lafoks — at least, he’s convinced of that.

Our songs tell stories about the cosmos in which I was born and live, and about my vision of the universe. I also include an absolutely fantastic guitar solo in every song. Yes, you’ve already figured it out: every guitar solo in every one of our songs reflects the incredibly complex and beautiful processes of our universe. It could be the accretion of gas onto a neutron star, the functioning of synapses in the brain of an intelligent being, the bifurcation points in the history of intelligent societies, or even stock market fluctuations. All of this is part of my vision of music and my vision of the universe.
